San Diego

J and I just got back from San Diego this morning. Taking the red eye is good in theory, but hard on the body. Needless to say, we won't be doing that again for a while.
San Diego... what a wonderful place. The weather is amazingly nice. Blue skies, blue ocean, clean air and friendly people.
A good friend of mine(Naoki) from my college days lives there now with his wife. We stayed at their place for the weekend and did just about everything we planned on doing.

Let's see, we drove by Torrey Pines (he lives 2 minutes away), had brunch on top of the hills over looking the ocean. J ordered a fish taco and it rocked our world. Wow... it was so good.
We then walked around downtown a bit and window shopped. Sat down for some gelato (which was awesome) and walked some more.
Sealed the evening with some authentic Mexican food. Went home and caught the tail end of the Notre Dame game. Chatted a bit and rested up for the next day.
The next day, we drove up to LA to visit J's uncle and his family. Rancho Palos Verdes was a beautiful community with breathtaking views of the pacific ocean. We had Dim Sum for lunch and then drove up to Santa Monica where we walked the pier and promenade.
On our way back to La Jolla, we stopped by at Old Town and had dinner at Cafe Cayote (voted best Mexican restaurant in San Diego 2 years in a row). It was great.... huge margaritas and very tasty food. I mean really tasty.
The last and final day, we took a road trip to Tijuana, Mexico. We took out a 1 day insurance plan for the car and crossed the border. It is night and day crossing the border.
We stopped by at this road side taco stand specializing in shrimp tacos. Naoki has been telling me about these tacos for some time. It was awesome. You line up and ask for whatever your heart desires. You eat standing up along with 40 other people. If you need more, you go up again and again.... When you finally had your fill, you go over to the cashier and tell him what you had and he rings up your bill. This sort of honor system would never work in the US. We need some university professors to diagnose this phenomenon.
We then drove to Revolution Street and walked around. I picked up a Panama hat and some key chains as souvenirs. One thing I notices was, the amount of Gentlemen's Clubs operating right on the main strip. 1 out of every 5 stores was a G-Club. Interesting.
We crossed the border back to the states and packed our bags to leave. For dinner, we stopped by at an In-and-Out Burger joint. I can't say enough about this heavenly establishment. I wish they had a store in NYC.... They are phenominal! Definately the best fast food joint in the states.
We got the the airport, said our good-byes and hopped on a plane back to NY. We landed around 6 in the morning. J went straight to work and I drove back in time for some meetings.
It's been a long day and I'm ready for bed... I will post pictures tomorrow.
Buenos noches, adios amigos!!!

Man, haven't checked out your blog in a while. Good stuff!
In & Out Burger definitely rocks. And I soooo know what you mean about all the strip clubs in TJ. Love the guys who stand in front and try to get you in: "Cold beer, and hot pu$$y inside!" LOL!! As far as the honor system goes, I can name off several places in the U.S. does that. Not only are they trusting with how many items you "purchased," but there are no cashiers, either. You place your $ in a box; if you need change, then you take it yourself. And yes, in the U.S.A. One place I saw is on Maui where you buy fruit, exotic flowers, etc. Nobody there whatsover. There are 2 burrito stands in D.C. near my office that also do this. There are a few places like your description above in Chicago, etc. And c'mon, man, you can't forget the scene in the first Clerks! ;-) Oh, and I feel sorry for J going right to work from that red eye. I did this last year flying back from Frisco. Sucked, but the time there in the convertible made up it.
