Watch this BBC clip.
I am not saying what Zidane did while the match was still in play is acceptable , but can I certainly understand.

Even in high school, no, scratch that... even as a little kid, you get heckled by the crowd, other parents, and of course, the other team. Heck, even your OWN team and coach will give you a hard time. But for this guy, who is a PROFESSIONAL, and for what I hear, a legend in his own time, in a venue such as this? He has NO excuse to do that. There's no understanding at all. Everyone yells at each other. I know soccer players are babies, which is one of the many reasons why I don't watch the sport, but c'mon man, headbutting in the final game of the World Cup game? What a child. Because of words? And a so-called pinch? Good thing he doesn't play rugby, football, basketball, bowl or golf. That may be too tough for him to handle.

YMMV

hmmm. inexcusable yes, but not un-understandable is my point. it was unfortunate to see such a great player exit his career in such fashion.
there are certain unwritten rules in soccer - like when a player is injured and the referee isn't aware of it because the ball play is on the other side of the field, players will kick the ball out of bounds to stop play in order to have the injured player addressed. when play is resumed, whom ever is given the throw in, will return the ball to their opponent's possession. sportsmanship 101.
another unwritten rule (examples: no body body-checks wayne gretzky, or tries to draw fouls on michael jordan because there is a level of respect for their accomplishments and what they stand for for the game) is trying to get the opposition's star player in foul trouble or deliberatly coaxing him to commit a mistake ending in his dismissal. you play the game as it should be played and not by cheap plays.
trying to lure zidane into a red card is low. it is not how soccer should be played and certainly not something the Italians should be proud of.
well the Italians have their hands full with corruption up to their ears.
anyways, it's yesterday's news.
it's done with.. let it be.
